Trade lane details – trust our expertise

Frequent North Atlantic services connect New York/New Jersey, Savannah, Charleston and Houston with Felixstowe, London Gateway, Southampton and Liverpool. US West Coast cargo normally uses the Panama Canal, rail to an East Coast gateway or a transhipment service.

Airfreight capacity is extensive between major US airports and London Heathrow, Manchester and other UK gateways. Routing depends on origin, commodity, capacity, customs readiness and dangerous, valuable or temperature-controlled status.

Future Outlook for Trade between USA and United Kingdom

Growth opportunities remain in aerospace, machinery, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, digital technology, energy, defence-related supply chains and advanced manufacturing. Deep investment links support time-critical and high-value logistics in both directions.

The UK–US Economic Prosperity Deal agreed in 2025 is not a comprehensive free trade agreement. Any tariff relief or quota applies only where the relevant measure has been legally implemented and its conditions are met; otherwise the UK Global Tariff and product rules govern.

Duties & Charges

Duties & Charges

  • Without a specific implemented concession, the UK Global Tariff applies. Duty is determined by commodity code, origin, customs value and any quota, suspension or trade-remedy measure.
  • UK import VAT is generally 20%; reduced or zero rates apply to certain products. The taxable amount normally includes customs value, duty and specified incidental costs.
  • Postponed VAT accounting may be available to eligible UK VAT-registered importers, subject to HMRC rules and correct declaration data.
  • Excise, inspection, port-health, handling, storage, port and customs-agent costs may also arise. This is not legal or tax advice.

Typical risks

Typical Risks

  • North Atlantic weather: Winter storms and high winds can affect vessel schedules, ports and flights.
  • US hurricane season: Gulf and South-East Coast ports, airports and inland transport may face disruption.
  • UK winter and flooding: Road, rail, terminal and airport operations may be affected by storms, snow or flooding.
  • Peak periods: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year and retail peaks tighten capacity and reduce working days.
  • Port and rail congestion: Berth delays, blank sailings, terminal congestion and inland bottlenecks can extend transit.
  • Regulatory delays: Missing MHRA, UK REACH, food, conformity or import-control evidence can delay release.
  • Security and dangerous goods: High-value cargo, batteries and chemicals require early acceptance and security planning.
