Sea freight from China to South Africa: efficient routes, resilient supply chains

We ship your cargo via China’s busiest container ports directly to South Africa’s key maritime gateways. Around 60 per cent of South Africa’s container throughput passes through the Port of Durban, which serves as a logistical lifeline for the economic hub of Gauteng.
Typical sea freight transit times from China to South Africa at a glance
| Sea freight service | Details | Transit time |
|---|---|---|
| FCL | Full container load (e.g. Shanghai/Ningbo/Shekou – Durban) | 20 – 36 days |
| Expedited LCL | Prioritised CFS handling & direct shipping connection | 22 – 28 days |
| LCL | Cost-effective consolidated cargo incl. standard CFS handling | 26 – 38 days |
Indicative transit times (port to port)
FCL (Full Container Load) services
For full container loads from Shanghai or Ningbo to Durban and Cape Town, we usually estimate 24 to 36 days. Direct services from southern China (e.g. Shekou to Durban) can reach their destination in as little as 20 to 22 days under favourable conditions.
Expedited LCL
For time-critical part loads, we explore options for prioritised CFS (Container Freight Station) handling combined with direct shipping services. This often results in a noticeable reduction in transit time compared to standard groupage shipments.
LCL services (standard groupage)
For regular groupage shipments, standard industry consolidation and deconsolidation processes at CFS warehouses are to be expected. These processes take additional time. For this cost-effective option, a total transit time of approximately 28 to 40 days should be allowed for on this route.
Logistics planning in a challenging market environment
Global shipping diversions around the Cape of Good Hope are leading to a significant increase in vessel traffic off the coast of South Africa. This requires particularly forward-looking transport planning.
We address these challenges through proactive advice and the strategic use of modern infrastructure upgrades. Infrastructure improvements in the ports of Durban and Cape Town are already having a positive effect on the reliability of sea freight services.
We monitor efficiency gains in South African seaports very closely to optimise your supply chains.
- At the Durban Container Terminal (Pier 2), new private terminal management by the international operator ICTSI has been ensuring a gradual optimisation of handling speeds since early 2026.
- At the Cape Town Container Terminal, extensive investments in new gantry cranes and expanded reefer capacity are taking effect. This will help us better mitigate weather-related delays caused by strong local winds (the “Cape Doctor”) in future.
Proactive equipment management
The longer vessel rotations around the Cape are straining global container availability. Empty containers often arrive late at the Chinese export hubs.
To prevent delays in delivery to your production sites in China, we focus on diversification: we assess your requirements at an early stage and draw flexibly on various carrier partnerships. Should a particular container type become scarce with a shipping line, we use our close local contacts and switch to alternative allocations. In this way, we secure the appropriate cargo space for your goods before bottlenecks arise.

Classic sea freight routes
South China (Shenzhen/Guangzhou) → Durban / Cape Town
The ports in the Pearl River Delta offer the shortest and fastest direct connections to South Africa. We prefer to use this route for time-sensitive high-tech and electronic goods.East China (Shanghai/Ningbo) → Durban / Cape Town
As the world’s largest freight hubs, Shanghai and Ningbo serve as the backbone for industrial goods and machinery. We maintain close carrier partnerships at these locations. This supports reliable capacity planning for your FCL and LCL shipments.Northern China (Tianjin/Qingdao) → South Africa
Thanks to newly established direct services, for example from Tianjin, transit times for goods from China’s industrial north have been significantly reduced – by up to 10 days.
