Röhlig-Grindrod and Grindrod Intermodal together have launched their own Block Train Solution, connecting the port of Durban to Johannesburg. The fifty-wagon private-rail siding facility was constructed by Grindrod Intermodal at their seven-month-old Grindrod Intermodal facility in Denver. Containers are loaded direct from vessel in Durban port and taken to Grindrod’s private siding facility in the Gauteng Intermodal Terminal in Denver in an average transit time of 40 hours. This offers customers the opportunity to share in the benefits of Block Train movements, avoiding congestion at common user terminals, as well as enjoy preferential rail rates, which are more competitive than road transport.
