Transporting oversized cargo: Antennae from China to Indonesia

General

Our China and Indonesia teams transport several 13m antennae to Indonesia

22nd August 2022 - Transporting oversized cargo can feel like feel like a mammoth task, but Röhlig Logistics can help you to find the best way forward.

Recently, our China and Indonesia teams helped a customer transport several 13m antennae to Indonesia.

Röhlig offered a multi-modal, tailor-made solution for transporting oversized cargo. Starting from the manufacturer in Xi’an, China, the antennae travelled piece-by-piece via truck to the eastern Port of Qingdao. From there, they were loaded onboard a vessel to Jakarta before the final domestic transfers to islands throughout Indonesia.

Our customer required the delivery be completed within 70 days. In some instances, there was only one vessel per fortnight capable of carrying oversized freight from Jakarta to neighbouring islands. Good timekeeping was therefore essential.

Each delivery, weighing around 65 tons at 330 CBM, was loaded into 4x40’ high cube and 2x40’ open-top containers as well as a 1x40 flat rack (over-width) container. As transporting oversized cargo can be difficult on smaller local roads, our Jakarta-based team travelled ahead to one of the more remote destinations to help coordinate the final stages.

After the antennae arrived from Jakarta, they were safely discharged and moved to POD by a domestic carrier. At one destination, the antenna pieces were transferred to 15 trucks to avoid the large containers hitting overhead power lines. A police escort was also required enroute to the delivery point for security purposes, as well as manouvering the large crane equipment needed to lift the cargo.

Röhlig also offered a range of services including unloading, unpacking, and taking photographs to document the delivery of the antennae.

Arranging heavy cargo transportation may involve large lifting equipment, road barriers, overhead powerlines, traffic controls and many other challenges, hence the entire transport process to remote areas must be strictly controlled.
