Röhlig Logistics AI Usage Statement
As the use of AI continues to grow in business, research, and industry - such as in the logistics sector, where there is an increasing need for process optimisation - legal requirements and ethical considerations are coming increasingly into focus. This requires balancing a variety of issues and challenges. The growing demand and need for AI applications are met, in particular, by requirements regarding data protection, transparency, algorithm security (keyword: algorithmic bias), the protection of copyrights, and accountability.
However, ethically responsible AI use can only take place by addressing and taking into account the aforementioned topics. The framework is established by applicable laws and regulatory requirements. Among many others, including national regulations, the EU AI Act and the GDPR are particularly noteworthy. The requirements for AI developers and users under the EU AI Act are tiered according to risk and mandate not only risk management, data quality, and cybersecurity, but also extensive documentation and employee training.
The European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) governs the processing of personal data and imposes strict requirements on the handling of personal data. Logistics service providers that use AI systems must comply with these requirements and ensure transparency, lawfulness, and fairness in the processing of all data.
In addition, the European Commission has published ethical guidelines for trustworthy AI, emphasising principles such as fairness, transparency, accountability, and societal benefit. Despite their non-binding nature, these guidelines significantly influence the development and deployment of AI systems.
Our approach to AI
We keep pace with the times and are committed to the responsible development, implementation, and use of AI.
We strictly align our activities with legal requirements and strive to address issues such as AI bias, data protection, explainability, and transparency in AI systems at an early stage. We have established internal guidelines for the use and development of AI and raise awareness among relevant employees through training programs that ensure legal requirements are met, misuse is prevented, and the full potential of AI is realised in the areas of the logistics industry that are relevant to us. Every AI application is coordinated with our data protection experts and management to ensure accountability across all areas.
